Thanksgiving isn't just about turkey and dressing. Those things are great and while family gatherings can be wonderful or a struggle (often both) there is more to the day than this. Thanksgiving is about helping each of us think about our own "attitude of gratitude". Being thankful/gracious has profound psychological and physiological benefits.
